  • Devices that weren’t purchased directly from Apple, an Apple Authorized Reseller, or cellular carrier can be added to Apple School Manager, Apple Business Manager, or Apple Business Essentials using Apple Configurator.
  • Apple Configurator for iPhone can add:
    • iPhones with iOS 16 or later
    • iPads with iPadOS 16.1 or later
    • Mac computers with Apple silicon or the Apple T2 Security Chip
  • Apple Configurator for Mac can add iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV devices.
  • Devices must be erased and at the beginning of Setup Assistant before being added to your Apple deployment program.
    • Stop at the Choose a Wi-Fi Network pane of iOS Setup Assistant.
    • Stop at the Country or Region pane of macOS Setup Assistant.
  • Choose how the device should connect to the internet:
    • Share Wi-Fi credentials from the iPhone
    • Use a network configuration profile
    • Use an Ethernet connection
  • Apple Configurator uses the iPhone camera to scan a pairing code that appears on the device to be added.
  • After a device is added to your Apple deployment program, assign it to an MDM server.
  • A 30-day provisional period begins once it’s enrolled with an MDM server.
    • This allows users to release the device from your Apple deployment program, supervision, and device management.
    • Devices can be shut down and stored to prevent users from releasing them.
